Title: JASDF F-15EJ: Another FAR Mudhen
Post by: FAR148 on April 04, 2010, 04:10:51 pm
Well since my Hellenic Air Force F-15E is coming together so well and so fast, Im doing something I have not done in years. Work on two models at the same time. normally I would not start another kit until I finish or stoped working on one. It should not be that bad, one is winding down and that one is starting up. Here's what she should look like when she's done, plus some cool tail art.

Profile by Trigger (http://www.arcforums.com/forums/air/index.php?showuser=2384)

Here's what I have done so far. I shot the base colors for the seats, tub, instrument panels and the rear hood.

My F-15EJ will be powered by GE's F-110-GE-129. So I looked in my stash and pulled out two resin nozzles.

For my F-110-GE-129, I'm going to use the lower part of Academy's F-15E afterburner can, the upper ring of Revell's can and top it off with my resin nozzle. Ta Da!

Next up, I'll be working on getting her wings and tails all together. You can see her Greek sister in the background.

Those engines will give even more power to play with!

Any thought regarding ordnance fit yet? Anti-shipping, as the scheme suggests?

<...> the Mudhen Teriyaki!

Well as of now, I got Hasegawa JASDF Weapons Set and paint on the way. I'm thinking a mix bag of weapons.

Teriyaki does sound good <_<

I actually think this idea could almost have come real if the F-35 hadn't been on the table as well.

Perhaps similar to the South Korean F-15Ks:

If adventurous (we know you're capable of it), you could perhaps also add some features from the Silent Eagle (click to expand):

(http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:L-AgSMoZxeQBVM:http://www.flightglobal.com/airspace/photos/f-15se/images/28530/boeing-f-15se.jpg) (http://www.flightglobal.com/airspace/photos/f-15se/images/28530/boeing-f-15se.jpg)

Other options could include some of the real world projects Japan has been developing:

TRDI UAV:

Don't forget the GE-110s have white insides:

I actually think this idea could almost have come real if the F-35 hadn't been on the table as well.

Actually, the F-15E was one of the "contenders" for the original FS-X "competition" that became the F-2. I use quotation marks since the requirements were written so that none of the 4 contenders (the others being F-16, F-18 and Tornado) had a realistic chance of winning without being Japanified.

Nice work on the nozzles Steven, looking forward tremendously to seeing you work your magic on this

Thanks for all the cool pics

That XASM-3 ASM looks pretty bad A$$, I just may have to make one or something similar. As for Silent Eagle, I don't think so. I'm not going to turn this build into a complicated one.

Is there an reason for the bright colours on the missiles or did the Japanese just want to brighten them up and away from boring old white??

I'd assume it's for test purposes Lance. Stands out more on film ?

I'd say your guess is pretty spot on, but I think it's be kinda cool to have multi coloured missiles to shoot. It'd make them look like giant fireworks...or am I thinking too much like Radish??

Glad to see you all enjoying the build
Made some more progress this week. Like her Greek sister, she is build from two of same kits but I got them at two different times. That why the wings are two different shades of gray. I also glued down the air brake and place the tails.

Started painting the nozzles. First I shot them with Model Master Titanium buffing metalizer and sealed it with coat of future. Than I mask off the the pettled and shot them either gunship gray or black. Don't want them too dark. I shot the one on the left gunship gray. Next up black on the tip of the nozzle. For the ceramic coating on the inside of the nozzle, I used light gray. I hate shooting white paint. >:(

Girls like accessories, Hers showed up today!

I also started on my idea of the XASM-3, the ASM-4. The body is from a Harpoon with the head of a Bullpup. The sides are just stock styrene. It still has a bit more work to be done to it.

Great to see you're taking on the challenge of an XASM-3

For the ceramic white inside modern jet nozzles, its not a pure white anyway - more of an ivory. I like to use "bleached bone" from the Citadel range over a white primer base coat. It all gets weathered & washed anyway.

Nev,
I think its too cool not to try to build one. But after searching online, I just could not find enough info to make a accurate copy. So I just based mine on it. Area that would be too hard to make or areas where I could not figure out what was going on there, I changed or just made it simpler. I have been working more on it this week than anything else. Thanks for the heads up on the ceramic coloring.

Thanks Moritz and John.

Can you guess what I'll be doing in 4 hours! (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v61/far148/whistle.gif)

Well after four hours I got good news and bad news. First the good news, the mold of my ASM-4 is really good -_-. The RTV does a good job pick up all the details. Now the bad news.... my resin sucks . It's too old (over 2 years) and it cures sticky. So, I order a new batch from Mirco-Mark and it should be here late next week. Hopefully this time next weekend I will have some resin ASM-4's.

Until next time,
Steven L

I thought about that and I don't want to turn my hobby into work. You know what I mean? But I will cast up a few sets of two and see how that goes.
Here's a small progress report. Got her front office done and painted. Seats are put together and got a base coat but still needs alittle more loving before I put them in the tub.

When I glued the two front fuselage halves together, I found I had a seam problem. I could hide the seam on the top or on the bottom of the fuselage. I chose to hide it on the bottom, it's easier to hide there.

Here are those nasty seams. >:( I just filled them with some gel super glue. Later I will sand it smooth and rescribe any lost panel lines.

My Mudhens are coming along nicely.

Well, my new batch of resin showed up yesterday and despite all my attempts, casting my ASM-4 is proving to be harder than I expected. Out of 12 tries, I got only 2 keepers. I will use them on something down the road. So, I'm going to stop pouring resin down the drain so to speak and move on with the build.

Until next time,

Title: Re: JASDF F-15EJ: Another FAR Mudhen
Post by: FAR148 on April 24, 2010, 07:35:35 pm
Since this past week at work has been retarded, I have not had much time after work to play with in two mudhens. But now it's the weekend... :tank: I been trying to get her ready for preshading and paint. Also want my two mudhens to be the same but different. Clearly both both being Strike Eagles but clearly two different variants. Her Hellenic sister is an older Strike Eagle, more like the mudhens of the USAF. The JASDF F-15EJ's are the newer next gen Strike Eagles with AESA Radar(Active Electronically Scanned Array), newer engines as well as updated weapon systems. So this weekend I have been working on those little details to make her different from her sister.

Had to fix up some seam around the air brake. You can see the areas where I have shot spot primer. Here's one of many little different details. The newer Mudhens has a GPS dome beside the air brake. I used a the clear lense cover from an AGM-65 from revell A-10 kit.

Here you can see I added some home made resin goodies to the underwing stations. The LAU-128 launch rails are resin copies of Academy's F-15K. And the chaff/flare boxes are copies of True Details USAF Pylons for F-4 Phantom II(really great set, you get a whole set of resin hardpoints and chaff/flare boxes for under $4 buck Plus it's an Ex-KMC mold!)

Moving the build forward, I manage to get her CFT's in place along with the hardpoints. Another little different detail, I added the "Sugar scoop" intake. They are cooling scoops for the newer engine.

I wanted to put a Sniper pod on my JASDF mudhen but I'm cheap and not going to pay for something I can make. Not trying to make a Sniper pod just something different. Here's my AN/AAQ-48 targeting pod. It started life as a data pod like an AN/AXQ-14 for the AGM-148 on my Hellenic mudhen. The body is a AGM-62 Walleye from Hasagawa weapon set B. The side vent thingy is from a AN/AAQ-13 LANTIRN pod(Hasagawa weapon set D). The rack is also from Hasagawa weapon set D. And to be different it is upside down. ;D The head of the pod was a problem. It is from the targeting pod from Revell Rafale M, which I used on my IAF A-10I. Before I move to SoCal I bought another Rafale. So I went into my stash looking for the targeting pod. If I find it, I will make a mold of it so I can cast some resin copies. But the Rafale kit I have now is the B, the Air Force two seat without the pod. So, I stole the targeting head from my Sandhawg for 4 hours. Made a mold and cast a resin copy. Super glued the new head to the body, rescribe a few lines and TA-DA!

Thanks Guys

Here's the last update this weekend on my two girls.

On the left is my Hellenic Air Force F-15E (http://www.arcforums.com/forums/air/index.php?showtopic=206414&st=0) and to the right is her sister, my JASDF F-15EJ (http://www.whatifmodelers.com/index.php/topic,28191.0.html). Both are Revell's 1/48 scale F-15E. In the middle in my rough art work for custom decals.

My HAF Mudhen will have an asymmetrical loadout. From left to right, AGM-148 (http://www.arcforums.com/forums/air/index.php?showtopic=206414&view=findpost&p=1956947), AIM-9, AN/AAQ-13 navigation pod, AN/AXQ-14, AN/AAQ-14 targeting pod, GBU-12(x2), AIM-9, AIM-120 and a drop tank.

And my JASDF F-15EJ will have a symmetrical loadout. The only differance side to side is the two pods, on the left is an AN/AAQ-13 navigation pod and right is AN/AAQ-48 targeting pod (http://www.whatifmodelers.com/index.php/topic,28191.msg425536.html#msg425536). From wing station to centerline station, AAM-4, AAM-3, ASM-4 (http://www.whatifmodelers.com/index.php/topic,28191.msg422210.html#msg422210) ( based on an XASM-3) and a drop tank on center line. Still need to do somemore work on her, paint her butt Chrome silver, install the nozzles, finish her AAM-4's, details, details......

Details, Details, Details... The Devil's where?

Started detailing both Mud hens, painting antennas, vent as well as added bare metal foil to the refueling doors. All the underwing weapon stations got a wash in water color/ink mix. Weapons got decals and foil. And both sets of targeting pods are ready to be added.

A lot of modeler skip this step, don't know why? Yeah, it take more time but the end the result are that much nicer. For me, by the time I get to this stage all the hard work is done and I'm on cruise control to finish the build.

Small update,
This week I got the canopies tinted. Yellow/gold tint for the JASDF Mud hen and a black/smoke tint for the Hellenic Bird. To tint the canopies, I started with a plastic cup about 3/4 full of Future. For the yellow/gold, I used yellow food coloring and for the black/smoke, I used Medea Com-art paint (http://www.chicagoairbrushsupply.com/mecoaicotr.html) transparent black. I added about 5 to 10 drops of color to the future so that the color is really concentrated. The stronger the color, the less coating/dippings it will take to tint the canopy. With a pair of reverse tweezers (http://www.google.com/images?hl=en&ndsp=21&tbs=isch:1&prmd=si&btnG=Search+images&q='reverse%20tweezers'), I dipped the canopies in the mix of coloring and future and place it on a paper towel to let the excess run off and let dry for a few hours. I redipped the canopies several times, until I was happy with the color.

I'm probably teaching grandma to suck eggs here as your modelling skills far oustrip mine, but I had a bad experience using food colouring & Klear to tint a canopy. Went on great, but after less than a day on a shelf in sunlight, the tint faded to a point where you could barely see it. I know this can be a problem with food colourings, a local cake company used to display printed cakes in the window, never lasted more than a few days!

You really are way too kind, I would never consider m'self any sort of "master". As for pushing Steve, and Steve pushing me, there's absolutely nothing wrong with some friendly and constructive 'rivalry' - helps you get things done (better ?), and that ain't a bad thing !

Cliff,
I too can't wait to see them armed. I was hoping to start hanging weapons this weekend but decaling took longer than I expected. Maybe next weekend.

Are the FOD covers scratchbuilt or AM?
Nev,
The FOD covers come with the kit. Of the two builds, the Greek one has been the high maintenance one! Her seams, her paint and now her decals! Some of them didn't dry properly and If I shot a flat coat on them now, they would most likely silver. Her Japanese sister on the other hand... smooth as silk.

Quote
How are you detailing the panel lines because they look absolutely wonderful

Gondor,
I washed the panel line in a mix of burnt umber water color, Medea Com-art (http://www.iwata-medea.com/index.php/medea/comart_transparent_colors/) transparent black paint and a few drop of Dawn dishwashing soap. My mix is about 30% water color to 70% transparent black. Once you are finish and happy with your paint scheme, you got to seal it with a good thin clear coat. If it is too thick, it will fill in your panel lines. Too thin and the wash will bleed into your paint job and you will not be a happy modeler! :banghead: I used Future thinned with Windex(about 90% Future to 10% Windex). Let the clear coat dry overnight and start your wash the next day. Brush on your wash, making sure it is flowing in the panel lines easily. If not add a drop or two more soap into your wash. Apply the wash and let it dry. Then come back with a damp soapy paper towel and wipe away the excess. Some like to wipe in the same direction of the airflow, whatever works for you. I wipe diagonal. Don't try to wash everything at once, just wash parts at a time. A wing, a tail or even a weapon station. Once you wash the whole model, you got to seal the wash for decal. Again, I used Future thinned with Windex.(Again same mix)

Until Later,
Steven L

Well the No Steps decals on the Greek Mudhen did not dry properly. I tried lightly poke around the decal with a sharp no#11 blade then hit them with Microsol and set but it did not work or help. So with a wet Q-tip and a new no#11 blade, I removed the decals. They lifted off easily. I shot a fresh coat of Future where the old decals were and will try again tomorrow.
