RAF 100 GB?
« on: November 12, 2017, 10:25:48 am »
i think this group build proposal was pretty obvious,

in 2018, the Royal Air Force will be celebrating its 100th anniversary.
to celebrate the centennial event, i thoought it would be a good idea to have an RAF GB.
anything can go, from the early days in April 1918 to today (and possible future).
on the bench:

-all kinds of things.

Hi Nils.

I have been thinking about this and I have a couple of options.

No 1. When I get down to having the GB Poll for next year it will be included.

or

No.2. I will run an RAF 100 GB special that will run for the whole year or perhaps from 1/4/2018. This would be in addition to the normal 3 GB's plus one week build.

Of the options I am very heavily coming down to option 2.

Well - I like the sound of the second option (seeing as I attempt to put everything into 'RAF' red-white-blue roundels - or variations thereof!)  ;D

No. 2 sounds good to me too, and I like the 1st April start date, Very appropriate for us.

Ill provide the counter argument. I think option 1 would be best- have it as one of the 3 month GBs next year- it seems deserving and I am sure would get much interest. It just seems tougher to get and maintain interest in a year long GB, and then we have overlap issues, which never seems to work well, especially if a year long and a 3 month GB were finishing at the same time.   Even 6 months would be better than a year.  My 2 cents.

That's a very good set of arguments and they have been banging around in my brain for a while. People seem to be able to retain enthusiasm for 3 months and after that the enthusiasm of some tails off. If we start on 1/4/2018 then we'd have a 9 month build and as I say this would be in addition to the normal 3 GB's run over 3 months. I need to think about it and chat to a few people.

I will get something up on site about it when I'm clear in my own mind.

With long running community builds there is a tendency for some people to get enthused, start something and then not touch it until the last minute when they realise how little time they have left and panic.
I take part in an annual 11 month long one on the Model Cars Magazine forum and I always behave like this.
If I was given a choice i'd say make it 3 months and include it in the voting.

I like option 2, as it usually takes me a year to build something. I might even build something out of one of my vacform kits.

I have an idea percolating its way through my brain which may cover all options, so can you give me a couple of weeks to try and think it through please ?

I'll then get a vote up looking at the various options sometime around Christmas/New Year, yes it's not that far away  :o

Whatever happens it will not interfere with the next scheduled G.B. which is the Cold War G.B. this will go ahead as agreed in this years vote.

I'm with the shorter GB, for the same reasons.  I know there was mention of a Great War GB as well?
I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

Or.....

Run for the year but have 3-month mini-themes?  Inter-war, WW2, post-WW2.  I realise the last one's huge in scope so maybe split it into Cold War and The 21st Century.

That's part of the idea that's rattling around in my brain at the moment. Not quite that but something similar. HOWEVER we have to recognise that not everyone recognises it as a significant anniversary and might say - "well this year was the U.S.A.F.'s 70th" for instance. So I still want to have two other GB's and the One Week GB to hopefully cover everybodies interests.

As I said give me a couple of weeks to settle on my proposals.

Also, 11 November next year marks the centenary of the end of WW1, the 100th celebration of Armistice/Remembrance Day, which is also good for a special GB.

Off topic but WTH;
I note that a lot of historians are now viewing the entire period from 1914 to 1945 as a single conflict with a 20 year hiatus in the middle. I think if the pre-1914 period is looked at closely the conflict actually started sometime in the 19th Century with small "skirmishes" including the Boxer Rebellion (1899-1900), the 2nd Boer War (1899-1902), the Philippine-American War (1899-1902), Somalia (Jihad 1899-1905), the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905), the Italo-Ottoman War (1911-1912) & the two Balkan Wars (1912-1913). Future historians, I'm fairly sure, will actually view the entirety of the late 19th Century, through the 20th Century & into the 21st Century as a single conflict going through various hot, cold & warm stages, & changes of allegiance brought about by rapid changes in technology, communications, population growth, & trade & economic (&, possibly, social) imbalances.

We tried a WWI GB a few years ago and for various reasons it wasn't successful. However it will be included in the voting when that comes up next year.

Your off topic comments are interesting and I must admit I'm coming around to the idea myself. The French War Minister, Maginot, definitely considered the Versailles Treaty of 1919 as nothing more then a truce. Whence the building of "his" Line. I've just ordered the new Osprey book on it
