It looks like an excellent turnout this year. Lots of excellent models in many, varied categories. I have 5 entries myself. 2 in Sci-fi, Poe's X-wing and a Star Destroyer. 1 in Ships, my before and after models of the USS Aaron Ward. 1 in Micro-scale Aircraft, the B-49 Flying Wing. And finally in the Un-nominated section the Gemini Spacecraft w/ space walker. Not expecting any placings, also I don't envy the judges as the standard of entries is awesome.
I'll be back down there this arvo for further lurking and the presentation.

You lurked to well, Brother wikxie, I saw you not!

Pity, really. :-\

Uncle Les made a killing in the awards, again.

I made a Mentioned in Dispatches but no gongs.

Actually this kit, & both my other armour kits, got swapped & changed from one category to another then back again as the guys tried to work out where best to put them. I've got to give it to the club members, they were trying to find the best place for them to get a result. Today I was told several times, maybe a dozen, that my building skills are right up there but that I had no references & therefore started at 0/10 for that element. They went on to say that the kit instructions should be part of the references, even if I've strayed well away from them, &, as there aren't any images of what I build, write down my ideas & thought processes during the build, & to include my "WiP" photo's (that impressed them, that I take them) as part of my references, with a running commentary if possible.

So, this year, I was, it seems, my own worst enemy. ;)

2019, just you wait! ;D

PS: Have photo's here: https://guyplachy.smugmug.com/SAPMA-Expo-2017

Well done Womby.
When I enter whiffs at Expo I print out the bulls**t backstory I posted here and stick it in the reference bag along with any pics I used for camo inspiration and instructions and box art from all the kits involved and a $5 note (joke - you won't even get a third place for less than $50).
Overwhelm them with crap is my plan.  They won't bother to look at it but it might score some points for weight...
The guidelines say things like catalogue your planning and thoughts and include progress photos of your build and mark up the instructions showing where you modified the kit (can you imagine?  I'd like to see Dizz doing that... ;D).  That however strikes me as being boring and i'd much rather be building the next one (or finishing the one I started 3 back before the one i'm going to finish next).

Off to grok your photos now.

I like the shortened 55 Chevy Gasser and the Ferrari ATAT made me smile (although it could do with running shoes).
The collection of MiG 15s shows dedication and i'm jealous of the collection of Airfix 54mm horsemen (I want to whiff some of them but they are like hens teeth).

Thanks for sharing.

Brill pics there, and some REALLY good stuff on show too. Well done for your certs.

My fave of the others was the Silver Swallows aerobatic team, splendid idea and well modelled too.

As for all that 'required reference material', that way lies madness to my mind. That's what they require, or used to, in the Flying Scale Model arena, and I've seen some guys show up with a book 3-4" thick with all the 'reference material'. I really can't see how you can supply that with a Whiff anyway, unless we all have our own brains on show as 'reference'.  :o

Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

Regards
Kit

Well, as most of my builds tie in to my Royal Australian Marines alternate history, I'll just have to finish that before the next Expo I attend (2019) & include a copy with all my builds. ;D

As I'm only up to 1915, that could be quite a task, though.

In all honesty, I don't mind doing what they ask, it's not completely ridiculous as the first two words in each explanation will be "What if ...", followed by a brief outline of the source of the inspiration & a my mental processes of how I got to designing my build. I can easily create a volume of "in progress" build images with explanations of where I was at & any changes I made (& why) during the build, & of similar weathering & dirtying of vehicles/aircraft, etc. For the RAN Coast Guard Grebe, for example, I could have included images of various other national coast guard aircraft schemes & explained that the one I did was the individualised Australian scheme, as opposed to a US/UK/Dutch/whatever, scheme (Australia doesn't have a coast guard, by the way, that role belongs to the RAN, coordinating with Border Force & several private/volunteer organisations). Give me some practice on MS Publisher. ;)

The guy who built the Wessex wreck has some impressive reference files for builds that have come from his imagination & he's a bit of a "rust" specialist. He did a diorama some years ago of a couple of wrecked/abandonned cars & his file included dozens of images of rust, rusting vehicles, old junked farm vehicles, old paling fences, etc., elements of each of which were in his build but not of the objects he built.

Actually, it's RAM(arines), Chris. ;)

In my alt, hist. the RAN FAA follows the RN FAA camo schemes, while the RAM Air Service goes it's own way. Although both use the big-white-circle early Australian/Asia-Pacific roundel for the entirity of the war.

There's a build thread for it in here somewhere!

Oops, apologies to you and them, never upset a Marine  ;)

I was thinking an overall Sea Blue Bearcat but with those large blue/white roundels for use over Borneo. Go with a couple of other Australian aircraft I have fighting over Borneo.
