Austrian Bundesheer cammo colors?
« on: August 09, 2017, 03:46:48 am »
Apparently an expert question, potentially with two solutions.

Does anyone know here which colors/tones are (officially) used for the two-tone paint scheme on some Austrian Air Force aircraft like the PC-7, Shorts Skyvan or some UH-1s? I did some legwork, but could not find any useful information. I assume that these are both RAL tones; the light, brownish tone that looks like olive drab  could be RAL 7013 (Braungrau), a standard color of the Austrian Army (used on many vehicles and even uniforms). But the dark green tone... maybe RAL 6009 Tannegrün?

As an alternative, maybe someone has access to one of Airfix' Shorts Skyvan boxings - one of them has a camouflaged Austrian Bundesheer machine as an option - I could not find any legible file/scan of the painting instructions online, and knowing what Humbrol colors are suggested there (even though I'd assume 155 and 30) might be helpful, too.

Thanks a lot in advance!

Just based on appearances, British Dark Green and Dark Earth would be reasonable matches for the top colors. the gear looks to be light ghost grey.

Hmm, it certainly is not a brown. The shades vary, depending on light an weathering, and what I can say so far is that these are two green tones, one rather blueish, the other almost brown. Olive Drab comes close (e. g. FS 34087), but I doubt that it is the US tone, or RAF/BS colors. But you never know, hence my inquiry...  ;)

RAL colours are WWII Luftwaffe RLM colours, just rebranded.  According to Micheal Ullmann, and he has done his research.  A great deal of it.

Personally, I'd go with the Brown RLM 81 and teh dark Green RLM 82.  Although there's *still* controversy and confusion as to which number applies to which colour.

Try IMPS Austria, or see if Kit has a SAM which featured the Skyvan in detail as I suspect these will give you accurate colour matches

To me the colours look approx Hu30 Green and Hu29 Dark Earth which I would guess would be the colours on the Airfix instructions

Thank you, gentlemen. I already checked IPMS Austria, but they do not provide any useful information. I actually considered contacting the Austrian Army directly - they should know the answer...

RLM 81 is actually a good idea! The Modelmaster tone should come very close to the pics above. Not certain about the green, but RLM 82 is also an option.

Not official, but found a decal sheet for a Huey that gives RAL 6020 and RAL 7013:

I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

AH!!!! That's really helpful - my digital digging has not turned up anything useful yet, but that not only sounds believable, it also confirms my RAL tone theory. :D
RAL 7013 makes sense since it is "the" color of anything the Austrian Bundesheer uses/paints, and RAL 6020 would have been my vague bet for the dark green, too - but on a picture you never can tell for sure.
I was only able to dig up a scan of the Airfix Shorts Skyvan ...but it was/is hosted on Photobucket, so that it is not accessible.  :-\

Thanks a LOT, Mossie!

No problem!  I find decal sheets are a useful source for colours.  Even if the colours listed aren't 100% correct, they're usually pretty close due to the amount of research done.

Strangely enough, while looking I found a website dedicated to the Austrian Armed Forces called RAL 7013!

Yes, they seem to have an affectionate relationship to this specific tone. Kind of "corporate identity"!

Military tones seem to suit Skyvans.  It's giving me some ideas.

I actually contacted the Austrian Army, but they relegated me and my request to IPMS Austria, which did not appear very inviting to me in the first place and made me contact the Army directly. But thank to Mossie's find and input, I know what I need - vital info for a future project.  ;D

As an addendum, I was able to hunt down the Airfix Skyvan with Austrian markings in a friend's stash, and the recommended colors there are Humbrol 155 and 195. While the 155 is a tad too intense and "yellow-ish", it's probably the best guesstimate from the enamel range. In the meantime, Humbrol added the RLM tones, and 251 (RLM 81 Braunviolett) could be an alternative, too. RAL 7013 is actually a grey, even though a pretty murky one... Humbrol 195 is spot-on - it's actually the correct RAL tone, Chromdioxidgrün. The colors are also available from Revell, 363 is RAL 6020 and 46 is supposed to be RAL 7013, but I think it is much too dark, even though the olive drab tone goes into the right direction.
