Thunderbirds are GO!

Reminds me of a "MiG-21 Analog" somewhere in the stash that I want to build as a cammo'ed tactical fighter, some day...

The MiG 21 Analog was also known as the MiG 21 l and the MiG 21 11.
It was built to test the wings of the Tu 144.
The MiG 21 11/1 was the first version and it was followed by the MiG 21 11/2 which was used to test a number of different LERXs.
The test pilots so enjoyed flying these aircraft that they suggested a fighter version be built...

MiG 21 11/2 is in the VVS Museum at Monino.  MiG 21 11/1 was destroyed when the test pilot Viktor Konstantinov lost control while inverted when carrying out unauthorised low level aerobatics.

A model of the Analog would make a nice pair with one of the BAC221, hmmmmmmmmmmmm.
Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

Well Modelsvit do the Mig-21 Analog and Olimp do a resin BAC-221.

In the meantime going to be interesting to see what Zenrat's build matures into

Well originally it was going to get a T tail and a rocket booster but having read up on the Analog I might drop the T tail as the 11/1 & 11/2 were both tailless deltas and this is meant to be a development from them.
I might engineer a rocket booster into the space where the braking 'chute tube is.
I might add LERX.
I am not adding canards as that is taking things too close to the origin of the wings.
And then there's the question of whether its a prototype/experimental aircraft or an operational fighter.
Soviet prototypes seem to have been built fully armed so I think i'll scab on a gun pack and fit pylons and then decide on a paint job once its together.
Nothing much done today apart from glue a seam i'd missed on the wings, scribe some panel gaps for the elevons/ailerons. and paint the seat & pilot.

You could do it as Operational and possibly in camo in use by one of the Warsaw pact forces  ;)

I have a set of Finnish decals from the Airfix MiG 21.  Wonder what condition they are in?

Well in that case why not use a "Swedish style" camouflage pattern?
I'm sure the wings would feel right at home ;D

The British have raised their security level from "Miffed" to "Peeved". Soon though, security levels may be raised yet again to "Irritated" or even "A Bit Cross". Londoners have not been "A Bit Cross" since the Blitz in 1940 when tea supplies ran out for three weeks

Also, you could use the 21's tail planes as canards?

No canards and no Swedish camo - both are too close to the origin of the wings.

I've been reading up on the MiG 21 (MiG 21 Fishbed by Yefim Gordon & Bill Gunston) and last night got to the chapter on combat successes.
I had no idea the North Vietnamese downed so many US aircraft (31 B52s, who knew?).
It now makes sense to me why builds of certain Phantoms like to trumpet them as "MiG killers" - it's because it was more likely to be the other way around.
Maybe NVA markings for this?
