This would be a SNJ landing on USS Monterey in 1953 (I cheated, I looked at the url. ;D ).

Indeed.  Since the Boomerang was Texan-derived, I was just pointing out that it was a practical concept.

Cheers,

Logan

Absolutely, Logan!

My main point, however, was the ship - as others had been trying to work out which ship the Texans were landing on. (I had actually forgotten the SNJ/Texan link, having forgotten that the Wirraway was pretty much a licenced copy of that particular aircraft.)

Also, increasing the strength of the landing gear for carrier op's (should they have decided to) would have opened the way to using the 1,850 hp Pratt & Whitney R-2800 (trialed on the CA14A), which was manufactured under licence in Australia, rather than the Wright Cyclone R-2600, which had problems with delivery reliability, as they came by convoy from the US. Thus, the CA14A (which eventually reverted to the Twin Wasp but with a GE turbo-supercharger, giving a 25%-30% increase in speed) could have gone into production in a navalised form (CA14N?).

Guy

Note: The risk of undercarriage failure due to the weight of the R-2800 was another reason that the CA14A never went into production. With navalised landing gear - no problem! Although a turbo-supercharged Wright Cyclone R-2600 might have been the better option.

Capt my view re armament is to go with 4 rockets and a smaller bomb ? Maybe a 250lb or a couple of small fragmentation types for "deck clearance" ?

Thanks for the comments guys. It certainly does help ! My navalized bird ( my necessity, as I lost the 'real' bits ) has a larger propeller ( for the more powerful engine, just have to pick one ;-) and the landing gear is stubbier and sturdier.

I might find a smaller bomb for it...or just leave it sans bomb....but I will probably add the rockets to the folded wing.

Cheers !

Yeah, the other carrier I was thinking of was the Sable, not Badger.*
I took another look at the photo to try to read the number, and I started wondering what the elevator was doing there.

*The USN was offered another another lake ship, the Badger, that was used mostly for cattle hauling and was in pretty sorry shape.  The Navy informed the owners that they don't need no stinking Badgers ;D
The Leng Plateau is lovely this time of year

LOL....good one  ;D

A quick note on the armament : Dropping the bomb ( get it ? ) and might add the belly tank, as it is a ground pounder and doesn't really need the maneuverability.

I have almost finished the rockets. Going to add some wee bits of thread to the end to act as fuses. Here\s the technique for quick and easy yellow bands on the tips of pointy things. I might have learned it right here on this very forum !

Paint the whole thing :

Use a flat brush to add yellow to the desired depth:

Use the same flat brush to add the green tip again, and voila ! Stripes !

Thanks Chris. I packed these two little beauties away today in prep for our big party tomorrow....was afraid they'd get smashed up !

I plan on borrowing a camera in the new year and taking care of business as they say...in regards to a bunch of finished kits who's threads need to be closed out.
