Not a WHIF yet, although Dan Lee says he plans to build it that way. It's a preview of the Skunkworks 1/48 F-16XL, anyone thinking of purchasing it may find this useful: http://modelingmadness.com/review/mod/previews/kinsknk/48026.htm

I've spent a great deal of time searching to see if this had already been posted and couldn't find anything (trying not to repost as I know that upsets some people). Also, a great many hours perusing other threads and haven't came across it randomly, either.. so, without further ado:

Thanks for digging that one up for us ! I for one have certainly not seen it. Great looking model. I love the story as well. The fiish on the bare metal is especially impressive. A shame old Greg isn't around any more. RIP buddy !

Thanks, ya'll!!  Glad to be here. I'll more than likely be doing more reading than contributing but..... I have a whif Yak-9 in the works that is going to be decalled in contemporary US Navy markings....   ;)   So stay tuned for that.(i even came up with a half assed back ground story to explain why the US is flying Yak 9s long past the great war) I'm no master modeller so it probably won't be long before I'm done with it. No long hours spent on fine detail that I'm honestly not capable of yet.

It's still taking a while, though, because I'm making it out of an unknown manufacturer made in Russia kit (I'll post pics of the box when I kick off the thread for the build) that is.... well....   REALLY bad. More flash than a lightning storm. More filing than a CPA. BRITTLE plastic. I've had to repair both gear struts that I snapped in half. LOL    All my hours have been spent correcting huge flaws. The fuselage halves thickness are off by a condisderable amount, on and on and on.....  it's just a really sub par kit... THAT SAID, it's 1/72 and going to be fictional so WHO CARES.  lol  Nearly ready to prime and move into painting.    It'll come out decent...

Back on track..stumbling across this B17 is what opened me to the world of what-if and is what lead me directly here. I have it and Greg to thank for being here and finding a new caveat to a hobby I already enjoy. It was here just a few days ago when I was looking to see if this B 17 had been posted already that I learned of his passing.  :(  Sounds like he was a pretty good dude. But, it would seem his legacy lives on because thank to him there's a new whiffer in the ranks...  it all started right there with those yellow wings.

About that finish!  Minwax Wood stain!  HA!   I was going around the house digging things up to use on models...trying to "make do" with a tiny budget and utilise what I have MacGyver style when I came across a can of Minwax. I thought, "huh, I wonder if I could use that on something...  "   Turns out, that's what he used. I read about it a couple weeks prior and had forgotten all about it.  A couple days after I found the can I read the B17 story again and was reminded that he used it with great success.  I just wonder how it might look on darker finishes.

Scott Van Aken, modellingmadness

Not everyone's cup of tea, sure, but you have to admire the craftsmanship and, heck, I think it looks pretty neat!  Also, it's worth reading the write up:

Once again I urge a visit to the link to read the story. Some of the best parts of these are the stories behind them.
