More Found Objects Stuff
« on: November 20, 2009, 04:49:25 pm »
More useful Whiff fodder, this time from Sainsburys:

The red and purple things are roller stampers, i.e. they have an ink roller in the dome and a stamp in the disc. Main thing from my POV though, is that they have a perfect, moulding "nipple" free, clear dome of 26mm OD -  useful for all sorts of things.   The rest of the shape has obvious possibilities too. 2.00 for four.

The small domes are "frosted pearl cabouchons" from the craft range. Again, nice, small opaque domes, suitable as radomes, sensors, etc. 1.00 for a packet of 22.

nice one, I will look into those.
I use plastic 6mm airsoft BB's from gunshops, for my FLIR turrets on stuff. The ones I use are the white ones but, they need to be stuck with superglue. They cost me about 20p for 50.

How about the little titanium coloured fake pearls from craft shops?  I have used them for gun turrets in the past, but they would make splendid FLIR turrets with the addition of a small lens...

For full spheres you can spherical-headed push-pins that also, of course, incorporate a handy axle. The plastic is hard as hell and prone to cracking if you apply to much force, but on the other hand, it does mean you can use power tools on it without melting it into mush.

Think I'll use this thread to bring all my Found Objects pics into one place, since they're a bit scattered. If anyoone else finds anything tasty, please feel free to add it.

First off, a new one. I found these "Pop Crayons" in the toy section of a local garden centre. The cap fits on both ends of the body and the plastic is pretty hard stuff. Might make an EXINT pod in 1/72nd or a submunition dispenser in a larger scale:

Gaviscon (anti-indigestion tablets) container:

Mapad-brand pencil sharpeners:

Mapad erasers and a travel toothbrush cover:

More Mapad pencil sharpeners and a giant pen-shaped stationary set:

Left to Right, Ensure cap (prescription high-energy drink) another Mapad eraser and a re-sealable milk-bottle cap:

I have a load of those ensure drink lids, my Mum saved them for me when she was in hospital. I have used them as domes on an ongoing spacecraft project, and they make good BIG rocket burners.

Eggciting news: for Easter, Hobbycraft are doing "fillable eggs", which are hollow plastic egg shapes, approximately 70mm x 50mm, in various garish colours. The intention is that you decorate them fill them with sweets and give them to kids but to hell with the kids, the modelling possibilities are obvious, particularly since tne bottom half is a pretty good dome.

Best bit? Packet of 12 = 2.00.........

More found objects news, although I didn't buy any of these so no photos.

Sainsbury's are doing, in their stationary section, small novelty calculators for 1.00 they come in a variety of shapes, one of which is a flattened disc, approx 60mm across, which would make a good AEW/AWACS style radome. For 1.00, you could just throw the guts of the thing away and fill the button holes.

On the Easter egg front, there's a thing called a Hasbro Egg, which consists of a large translucent yellow plastic egg filled with packets of sweets. I'd guess it to be about 200mm on it's long axis. It's made of quite thick injection-moulded plastic and splits into two lengthways. I didn't buy one because one one half has a flat in it to make it sit straight, but that may not bother everyone. price is 4.00

Those are some great ideas, Weaver! You mentioned radar domes and I find those little tripods they use inside of pizza boxes to keep the lid from crushing the pizza are perfect for use as AWACS domes. Glue two of them together and Bob's your uncle. Here's a pic of a project I built a while back using them (1/144 scale).

If you ever want some of these (they make a dish about 4 cm across) Weaver, PM me your info and I'll get a couple in the mail to you, although you might need to wait until I order my next pizza.

Buttons can serve various uses...from science fiction detail, to wheels, to the basis for small scale flying saucers.

Also....what about garden hose attachements...a variety of uses incuding exhausts
