Some VTOL inspiration
« on: May 11, 2006, 08:26:39 pm »
Hi folks,

I've always loved the idea of VTOl aircraft.  I thought I would share with you some oddities from real life:

First two from the stable of Hawker Siddley:

The HS.141 Commuter Jet

and its little brother, the HS.140 Bisjet:

Then there is always something for the private pilot - the  Zborowski Hanneton III:

and then we come to something only conceived after a very, very serious (and long) drinking session at the Bristol factory - a tail sitting (well almost) commuter airliner:

Regards,

Greg

Cool stuff Greg.

Are you familiar with these files?
VSTOL.ORG ENCYCLOPEDIA

..from here:

VSTOL.ORG

It hasn't been updated for ages, but interesting stuff nonetheless.

That gunship XV-15 looks pretty coool!!! B)

Though I doubt that it would have been as capable as Apaches or Cobras at hovering behind some trees poping up only long enough to target and kill a Soviet tank. Probably more useful if similarly employed as the Hind, low and fast close air support.

If it's only weapons stations were on the sides of the fuselage it could have barrowed the little stub wings from the OV-10, that would look cool!

Looks like that XV-15 has the nose and Vulcan cannon off a Cobra.

Then you'll probably like these from an earlier post...

Then there was the AV-15 three-view that appeared in APR.  Very nice bit, that.

I always liked the ducted fan VTOLs - maybe its because of those big round ducts (so much like a big radial engines  )

This was a proposed development by Bell.  An operational version of the Bell X-22 - the Bell X-22A-1:

After seeing that tilt Rotor XV15, I'm thinking tilt rotor Cobra or maybe a Tilt rotor Hind would be a good idea.
